The transplant
A bone marrow transplant is required for a patient suffering from chronic infections, diseases or cancer. Bone marrow is the soft, fatty tissue inside one’s bones, and it produces blood cells. The transplant is a procedure that replaces damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow cells. It is a difficult, expensive and painful process, and requires post-op care in very hygienic conditions. In India, despite there being an incremental need for BMT, since it is very cost-intensive, there are very few organisations that support BMT treatments.
